How Much Concrete Do You Need for a Residential Flagpole?

If you’re installing one of our residential telescoping flagpoles, you don’t need a massive concrete footing or a truckload of concrete.

For a typical installation, we recommend approximately three 60-pound bags of concrete mix.

How Big Should the Hole Be?

Our installation instructions call for a hole approximately 30 inches deep and 18 inches round. Before adding concrete, place 6 to 8 inches of small gravel or crushed rock in the bottom of the hole for drainage.

The basic installation is simple:

  1. Dig the hole approximately 30 inches deep and 18 inches across.
  2. Add 6–8 inches of gravel or crushed rock.
  3. Place the included PVC ground sleeve into the hole.
  4. Surround the sleeve with approximately three 60-lb. bags of concrete.
  5. Use a level to make sure the sleeve is perfectly vertical.
  6. Allow the concrete to set and cure overnight.

You can see the complete process in our telescoping flagpole installation instructions.

Why Use a Ground Sleeve

Our telescoping flagpoles include a ground sleeve for installation. Rather than permanently setting the flagpole itself into concrete, the sleeve is secured in the concrete and the flagpole fits inside it.

That makes for a secure installation while allowing the flagpole to be removed later if necessary.

Don’t Forget the Extra Bag

Three 60-lb. bags is the approximate amount required, but concrete is inexpensive enough that having an extra bag on hand isn’t a bad idea. Hole dimensions can vary slightly once you start digging, particularly in rocky or loose soil.

More importantly, don’t reduce the size of the foundation just to save a bag of concrete. A properly installed foundation is what keeps your flagpole straight and secure when the wind starts working against a flag 20 or 25 feet in the air.
